Electromagnets.-An element for use in the manufacture of inductance coils or magnetic cores for transformers, electromagnets, or other electrical apparatus, consists of a sheet or strip of insulating material having a continuous layer, coating, or deposit of finely divided particles of iron or other material which is both electrically and magnetically conductive adhering to and evenly distributed over one or both surfaces thereof. The magnetic core comprises a plurality of such elements laminated, or the core may consist of a continuous conductive element wound into the form of a coil or spiral. Fibrous material such as paper is covered by the Schoop or other process with a continuous layer of iron dust which may be deposited in an atmosphere of nitrogen, carbon dioxide or some medium to prevent oxidation. One or both sides of the paper may be covered. After being covered, the element may be varnished or covered with other suitable non-conducting substance. To make a core, several such elements are laminated and bound together. The elements may consist of sheets of paper with a magnetic layer one side with or without a non-conducting coating. The coating may be produced by spreading a precipitate from a solution of a compound of iron o the magnetic particles may be precipitated directly on the sheet. Instead of laminations for magnetic cores, narrow strips of thin insulating material covered in the above manner with a layer of iron particles may be used, wound into a spiral. The spiral may also be used for the passage of electric current as a loading inductance coil in radio or in connection with electric signalling wherein a conducting wire is used between the transmitter and the receiver as distinct from radio methods. Instead of paper, cellulose such as used for making photographic films may be used. Specification 211,324, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], is referred to.
