Abstract

Condensers.-In a variable condenser of the kind having overlapping cylinder segments, the adjustable segment or segments are capable of axial as well as rotary movement. In one construction, Fig. 1, a fixed segment 1 is mounted on a cylindrical insulating member 3 having a screw-threaded end 4 engaging the panel 5 and a movable, segment 2 is carried by a spindle 6 slidably and rotatably mounted in the member 3. The terminals 7, 8 are mounted on the member 3, the terminal 7 being connected to a lug on the segment 1, while the terminal 8 is connected to the spindle 6 through a spring and shoe bearing on the spindle. In another construction, groups of intermeshing segments are connected to discs mounted on the member 3 and the spindle 6, the segments of one of the groups being preferably extended through different arcs. In another construction, Fig. 4, the movable segments are arranged in two groups, which can be adjusted relatively to each other as well as to the fixed segments. One group of movable segments 2<b> is carried by a disc 15 on the end of the spindle 6, while the other group 2<a> is carried by a disc 14 on the end of a sleeve 13 which surrounds the spindle 6 and is provided with a separate operating member 17. The sleeve is slidably and rotatably mounted inside the insulating cylinder 3 carrying a disc 16 which carries the fixed segments 1<a>. In another construction, Fig. 5, a fine adjustment is obtained by axial adjustment of the cylinder 3, which for this purpose is mounted on a fixed metal sleeve 20 carrying the spindle 6. A plate 22 on the end of the cylinder 3 carries a nut 23 engaging a screwed spindle 24 provided with an operating knob 25. A shoulder on the spindle 24 engages a fixed plate 26, so that rotation of the spindle effects a slight axial adjustment of the cylinder 3. Sheets of mica may be introduced between the cylinder segments to increase the maximum capacity.
