227,182. Molins, W. E. Oct. 9, 1923. Cigarette-making machines.-Relates to apparatus for feeding oval cigarettes from a hopper and lapping them over one another. The feeding apparatus may be of the type described in Specifications 139,047 and 207,281, [both in Class 94 (i), Packing &c.]. Each cigarette as it' leaves a fluted delivery-drum or like conveyer is positively turned or tilted automatically to cause it to fall on the preceding cigarette in lapped formation and is retained in such formation during its furthere travel through the apparatus, during which the cigarettes may be grouped for packeting. In one form, Fig. 1, t'he cigarettes are removed from the fluted drum 1 by a forked plate 4, passing out of the hopper 3 below a roller 2. A pawl 5, with outer fingers 7 and a longer central finger 8, is pressed by a light spring 6 to engage the upper edges of the cigarettes, so that' a turning effect is produced which results in the cigarettes assuming the positions a, b and passing in lapped formation between a plate 9 and brush 10<a>. A conveyer 11 and pushers 10 group and forward the cigarettes as described in Specification 207,281, [Class 94 (i), Packing &c.]. To assist the turning movement, discs 12 with frictional edges may be mounted to rotate at a peripheral speed greater than that' of the drum 1 and to lift the cigarettes slightly from the bottoms of the flutes and to turn them into the position a. In a modification, Fig. 7, the cigarettes may be lapped in a reverse direction after leaving the drum. Plates 27 with projections 28 rotate above the forked plate 4 so that each projection cooperates with a stop 30<a> to tilt a cigarette into the position shown. When a group has been formed, the stop 30a falls and the group passes over a cork inset 36, the rear cigarette being supported by a stop 37 which falls behind each cigarette.
