Abstract

225,896. Carpenter, C. A. July 10, 1923. Padlocks; staples for locks; preventing release by destruction.-A padlock of the type having a gapped ring shackle has a slot in the body of the casing for the reception of the staple so constructed that the periphery of the lock casing is unbroken and no part of the gapped ring is exposed when the lock is locked to the staple. The staple does not project through the front cover plate when the lock is locked to it. The lock is adapted to be used in connection with the detachable angle plates, staples and slotted supporting plates described in Specification 225,962, and may be formed integral with an angle plate, hasp or obstruction bar as also described in that Specification. Figs. 8, 10, 11 show a lock the casing G of which is integral with the angle plate f having studs b adapted to engage slots a in a supporting plate A secured to the door jamb, Fig. 1. A slot g is formed in the underside of the casing for the reception of the eye c<2> of the staple D, Fig. 3. The gapped ring shackle H is rotated by a pin h<2> working in a slot h<9> in the cover plate h<6> and engaging in hollow stud h<4> in the disc h<3>. The. ring h is looked within the eye c<2> of the staple by a bolt i which is moved into position in the gap in the ring by a key working in the key pin k<10>. Levers i<1> are provided to ensure the use of the correct key, and an abutment k<11> is provided in the casing to prevent removal of the key except when thebolt is advanced to lock the ring H. A shield I is formed integral with the bolt i to move under the slot h<9x> in the cover plate when the bolt is shot and prevent the insertion of a tool through the slot to force the bolt out of engagement with the shackle H. The width of the lock may be sufficient to accommodate the staple eye c<2> without protrusion, or a dome-shaped part k<4> may be provided on the cover plate h<6> to receive the end of the eye, as shown in Fig. 11, when the width of the lock is less than the length of the staple eye c<2>. A stout pin or boss with a recess h<1> to assist in accommodating the staple eye is fitted within the casing to form a bearing round which the shackle H rotates.
