Abstract
225,197. Cellino, A. Oct. 29, 1924. Electrodes; electrolytes.-A cell adapted to work as a primary cell or accumulator has one or more positive lead peroxide plates of usual accumulator type, one or several negative plates formed of thin sheets of aluminium, lead, brass, copper, zinc, iron or other metal, and an electrolyte made as follows. In a 10 per cent solution of sodium silicate in distilled water are immersed lead and aluminium electrodes, and a continuous or alternating current is passed therethrough. A whitish liquid is produced which, after filtration, is acidified by addition of pure sulphuric acid until a density of about 20‹ BÚ. is attained. To this is added 6 per cent of zinc sulphate. The resultant liquid is used as the electrolyte and the cell is charged by direct or alternating current, a deposit being thereby formed on the negative plates which is insoluble on open circuit, but dissolves with production of current when the circuit is closed. For primary cells, the negative plates are separately formed as above. With alternating current, the poles of the generator are connected respectively to the positive pole and to an auxiliary electrode of pure aluminium. This arrangement acts in known way as an electrolytic rectifier. The auxiliary electrode for charging purposes may be permanently mounted in the cell.
