Abstract

A device for facilitating pointing a joint between adjacent surface elements, the device comprising a jointing composition receiving area, a passage through which the jointing composition can be passed from the receiving area into the joint, and levelling means, whereby in use jointing composition in the joint is level led by the levelling means. <IMAGE>

Description

A POINTING DEVICE This invention relates to a pointing device, particularly though not exclusively, for use in pointing joints between surface elements such as cast concrete paving slabs used for forming a garden patio.
Recently, new paving slab designs have been produced which reproduce when laid the effect of cobble stone, or brick paving and which require a gap, or joint, of 1 to 2 centimetres to be left between the slabs that imitates the gap between the elements reproduced on the surface of the slab. Hitherto most paving slabs are usually laid in a closely-abutting relationship. As the joint is more obvious with the new paving slab design, than with slabs which are designed to abut closer together, it has to be neatly pointed with mortar. Although pointing is a relatively simple task for the experienced person, slabs are often laid by unskilled amateurs. The current practice is to apply the mortar to the joint through a gap formed by two pieces of wooden board nailed together. The boards protect the patterned surface of the slabs from the mortar. It is an object of the invention to provide a device to assist in the pointing of surface elements such as slabs when arranged to form a surface such as a patio.
According to the invention there is provided a device for facilitating pointing a joint between adjacent surface elements using a jointing composition, the device comprising a jointing composition receiving area, a passage through which the jointing composition can be passed from the receiving area into the joint and levelling means, whereby in use jointing composition in the joint is levelled by the levelling means. The jointing composition will typically be mortar. Thus the device is advantageous in that it levels the jointing composition as it is pushed into the joint.
The levelling means may be arranged to return excess jointing composition to the jointing composition receiving area.
For example, the levelling means may have a ploughing action when moved along the joint. The levelling means may comprise a projection below the jointing composition receiving area. The passage may terminate in an aperture which is defined by the projection.
The device may incorporate guide means for guiding the device in use. The guide means may comprise a projection which extends into the joint between adjacent surface elements in use.
The device may comprise smoothing means which smooths the levelled jointing composition. This provides a neat pointed joint.
The guide means may constitute the smoothing means. For example, the guide means may comprise an elongate smooth surfaced projection which smooths the surface of the jointing composition in the joint. Where the surface of the projection is convex, it will produce a concave surfaced joint.
Preferably the device is of unitary construction. More preferably the device is moulded from a plastics material.
A pointing device in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure. 1 is a plan view of the device and; Figure. 2 is a schematic cross-section through a surface, in the process of being laid, along a joint between adjacent surface elements illustrating how the device is used.
The device 10 shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a trayshaped body 12 which is moulded in one piece from a plastics material. The body defines a substantially flat mortar receiving area 14 bounded by upstanding wall 15 which forms the aforesaid jointing composition receiving area. The body also defines an aperture 16. The aperture 16 is formed by a projection 18 which extends below the base 17 of the device. The edge of the aperture constitutes the aforesaid levelling means, and the inner surface of the projection constitutes the aforesaid passage.
The device is shaped so that when it is placed across adjacent slabs, the projection 18 extends a short way into the joint between two opposite paving slabs.
A second projection 20 is also formed by the base of the device, and is spaced apart from, but in line with, the projection 18. The projection 20 constitutes the aforesaid guide means.
The device is also shaped to provide a grippable handle 22.
In use, the device is placed over adjacent slabs, e.g 24, 26, 28 and 30, which have been laid on a surface 32 and spaced apart to provide a joint between the slabs which is required to be pointed. A supply of wet mortar mix 34 is then placed in the mortar receiving area 14. Mortar is then pushed down through the passage and out of the aperture 16 into the joint between adjacent slabs. In Figure 2 only slabs on one side of the joint are shown. The device is moved in the direction of arrow A of Figure 2 and any excess mortar in the joint is scooped up by the trailing edge 36 of the projection 20, and passes up back to he mortar receiving area 14. The mortar is thus levelled. The pointed joint is then smoothed by the second projection 20 to form a smooth concave surface 38.
The device of the invention is -particularly advantageous because it keeps mortar off the slabs thus avoiding surface disfigurement, and is cheap to produce and convenient to use.
