Abstract
Mortar is injected into the channel (14) between bricks (12, 13) by a gun which is provided with an accessory (10) having a base (11) which rests on the bricks (12, 13) and a shaping device (19). When the trigger is depressed mortar flows through gun and nozzle (7) into the channel (14). As the arrangement is moved in the direction of arrow 'A' the shaping device (19) provides the mortar (22) with its finished surface. The arrangement carried out the process of filling and shaping in a single operation thereby reducing the time taken by the two separate processes of the prior art. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Accessory for gun for inserting mortar into joints
This invention relates to an accessory for use with a gun for injecting mortar into joints.
After a number of years the mortar between bricks becomes erroded and cracks and crumbles. In order to replace this mortar it is necessary to remove the defective mortar and replace it with fresh mortar. The fresh mortar is first inserted into the joints and then shaped using an appropriate tool.
Traditionally, the mortar is carried to the brickwork on a mortar board and inserted into a joint using a pointing trowel. The mortar is then shaped in a separate operation often using a different tool, for example the handle of a bucket.
More recentiy, equipment has become available which pumps mortar to a gun which the tradesman uses to inject the mortar into the joints. However, it is still necessary for the tradesman to shape the mortar with an appropriate tool once it is in the joint.
The object of the present invention is to provide an accessory for use with a gun for inserting mortar into joints which will shape the mortar as it is placed thereby obviating the need for a separate shaping operation.
According to the present invention there is provided an accessory for use with a gun for injecting mortar into joints, which accessory is attachable to said gun and comprises a body member having a base which, in use, rests on brickwork to either side of a channel, means for introducing mortar into said channel, and means for shaping, in use, mortar introduced into said channel.
Preferably, said means for introducing mortar into said channel comprises a passageway which opens in said base.
Advantageously, said means for introducing mortar into said channel further comprises a nozzle which extends beyond said base so that, in use, said nozzle projects into the channel between said bricks.
Preferably, said nozzle is detachably connectable to said body member.
Advantageously, said nozzle is detachably connected to said body member via a bayonet fixing.
Preferably, said nozzle is provided with a screw threaded portion for attachment to a gun.
Advantageously, said means for shaping said mortar comprises said base to produce, in use, a flush joint.
Preferably, said means for shaping said mortar comprises a shaping device on said base.
Advantageously, said shaping device has an inclined leading surface.
Preferably, said shaping device is shaped to
produce one of a recessed joint, a round joint, a weather struck joint and a tuck joint.
The present invention also provides a tool for pointing brickwork comprising a gun having an accessory in accordance with the invention mounted thereon.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun for inserting mortar into joints provided with a special nozzle;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of part of the nozzle provided with one embodiment of an accessory in accordance with the invention in use;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the arrangement shown in Figure 2 with part of the nozzle omitted;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the accessory shown in Figure 2; and
Figures 5 to 9 show front elevations of five alternative accessories in accordance with the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a gun for inserting mortar into joints. The gun, which is generally identified by reference numeral 1, comprises a body portion 2 having an inlet 3 and an outlet 4.
In use, mortar is pumped through a flexible hose 5 to the inlet 3 of the gun 1. When a trigger 6, which is pivotably mounted on the body portion 2, is depressed mortar flows from the outlet 4.
A nozzle 7 is screwed onto the outlet 4.
The nozzle 7 is made of durable plastics material and is provided with two lugs 8 which project radially outwardly on opposite sides of the nozzle 7.
Referring now to Figures 2, 3 and 4, there is shown an accessory which is generally identified by reference numeral 10. The accessory 10 is made of tough plastics material and comprises a base 11 which, as shown in
Figure 3, is sufficiently wide to rest on bricks
12, 13 to either side of a channel 14 to be filled with mortar. The attachment 10 also comprises a body member 15 which extends upwardly from the base 11. A tapered passageway 16 is formed in the body member 15 and, as shown, receives the nozzle 7, the tip
17 of which projects beyqnd the base 11 as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The attachment 10 is secured to the nozzle 7 via a pair of bayonet slots 18 which engage with respective ones of the lugs 8.
A shaping device 19 is mounted on the bottom of the base 11 rearwardly of the tapered
passageway 16. The shaping device 19 has an inclined leading surface 20 which extends downwardly into a portion 21 of accurate cross section.
In use, the arrangement is first placed on the brickwork to be pointed with the nozzle 7
extending into the channel 14 between the
bricks 12, 13 and the base 11 resting on the
bricks 12 and 13.
When trigger 6 is depressed mortar flows through the outlet 4 and through the nozzle 7
into the channel 14. As the channel 14 fills the arrangement is pushed steadily forward in the direction of arrow 'A' (Figure 2). This
causes the shaping device 19 to shape the
mortar which is identified by reference numeral
22.
With a certain amount of practice a satisfactory pointed joint can be achieved without any further work other than to brush off the com
pleted joint when the mortar has set. (This also has to be effected during conventional
pointing). to 9 show accessories for produc- Figures to 5 ing different shapes of pointing, in particular recessed (Figure 5), round (Figure 6), weather struck (Figure 7), flush (Figure 8) and tuck
(Figure 9). It will be noted that the formation of tuck joints is comparatively simple compared with the elaborate and time consuming procedures which, of necessity, are used in the prior art.
Various modifications to the embodiments described are envisaged, for example the nozzle 7 need not project beyond the base 11 of the accessory 10. The accessory 10 and the nozzle 7 could be combined in a single moulding which would be attached to the outlet 4 of the gun 1. The shaping device 19 could be formed as an integral part of the base 11 or formed as a separate part attachable thereto.
It will, of course, be appreciated that the present invention can be used for pointing new brickwork as well as repointing old. Furthermore, it can be used for applying mortar between concrete paving siabs, tiles and the like.
