Abstract

223,011. Hinchley, J. W., Greenwood, R. G., and White, W. W. Aug. 15,1923. Peat, preparing.-A process of drying peat by the expression of liquid therefrom consists in subjecting the peat, whilst in the press, but prior to compression, to treatment with a hot fluid at a temperature not exceeding that at which distillation of the peat takes place. In one method of carrying out the process, the peat is first subjected to the action of steam for about three minutes and then for a period of twenty to twenty-five minutes to a pressure which finally reaches 4000 pounds per square inch. A suitable temperature for the preliminary heat treatment is 100‹ C. The peat may be pressed into briquettes in the apparatus described in Specifications 3998/15 and 101,782.
