Cutting and slicing vegetables &c.-A machine for slicing potatoes and fruit &c. comprises two side members 1 supporting a wooden table 3 covered with sheet metal and carrying two guides 5 above it and two guides 4 below in alignment with the upper guides, between which the table is slotted. Reciprocated between these guides 4, 5 by means of a connecting rod 14 and crank 16 from a shaft 17 driven by fast and loose pulleys 18, 18<a> or by hand, is a carrier frame 8 having risers to which are fixed the knives 9 by means of holding screws 10 and abutment screws 11, Fig. 5, which latter allow of adjustment of the knives to vary the thickness of the slice cut. On the front of the carrier 8, one at each side, are two vertical bars 12 having inclined edges, which, when this carrier descends, move to the left, Fig. 8, a depending arm 24 at each side and a transverse bar 23 which abuts against the arms 24 and is riveted to the underside of a bed-plate 21 which thus moves to the left in a fixed casing 22 against the action of its spring 26a. The arms 24 are rigid with a casing 25 which moves in slotted guides 28 fixed to the guides 5, this casing being returned to the right by springs 31, Fig. 2. This movable casing 25 carries a plate 27 pressed downwardly by integral rods 27<a> and springs 27<b> in order that this plate may hold the article while the carrier 8 is rising. A shield 32 and side guards 5a on the guides 5 protect the operator's fingers from the knives which are corrugated longitudinally, Fig. 5. The articles to be sliced are held against the knives by a block 33, Fig. 8, carried in a frame 34 integral with a rod 35 and handle and also integral with a rod 39 surrounded by a spring 41 which abuts against a fixed stop 38 in order to press the block 33 to the right. These means can be locked by a pin 42, Fig. 2. The waste lubricating oil, which falls into a tray 46, Fig. 2, is prevented from contaminating the out slices in the tray 44 by a partition 43.
