Abstract

286,811. Thomson, D. B., and Sinith, C. B. Dec. 23, 1026. Cutting slices in succession.-In a reciprocating disc knife slicing machine, the knife reciprocates vertically and cuts on the down stroke. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, the knife c is carried in a frame c slidable on posts d joined on the top by a bar j<1> having lugs j carrying slidable spindles i<2> which carry the tops of rack members i<l>, the bottom being carried on similar spindles i<2> slidable in brackets k on the base a. The racks comprise pins i projecting from plates, and a curved guide l is disposed below the pins. The racks are slidable in the plane of meshed pinions g, h, the pinions h engaging with pins i. Buffer springs are coiled on the spindles i<2>. At the end of the downward stroke, the pinions h encounter the guides l and being prevented from moving downwards, move the racks to the right (as seen in Fig. 2), and then travel up on the other side of the racks. The rotation of the knife is continuous in one direction. At the top of the stroke, the racks return to their previous position and the pinions h travel down the right hand side of the racks. The frame e contains a shaft f, carrying the pinions g and connected to a handwheel x', and bevel and sprocket gearing for rotating the knife. The frame e in its upward stroke raises a slider o on the. post d, and actuates a pawl p<1> through links o<1>, o<2>. The pawl p<1> engages a ratchet wheel connected to the feed screw q<1> through bevels. The slice thickness is regulated by a ratchet shroud, adjustable and locked by a rod r<1>. Rapid adjustment of the feed table is effected by a handle p<3>. A support u slidable on rods u<3> holds the meat against the cutter, and is automatically moved away from the meat during the feed motion by a flexible member u' which is connected to the support u and passes over pulleys to the link o<2>. A spring v tends to press the support against the meat. The clamp consists of a flexible metal band s secured to two box-like casings s<1> slidable one on each upright s<3>, and levers t pivoted at t<1> to the casings s<1>, provided with wedge-like projections t<2>, Fig. 6, which grip the uprights when the leavers t are depressed. An abrasive member, normally inoperative, may be pressed by a spring against the knife when it requires sharpening. The Provisional Specification describes a curved guide at the top of the rack in addition to the guide l.
