Description
2224531 1 PILING his invention relates to sheet piling and more
pa!-,-icu"liar"iy relates to interlocking p.'.liric sections and wedges for enhancinC the degree by which adjoini-ing sections are -locked together anci.1thereb.v improving the the piling.
structural efficiency of t interlocking sheet piling is used for a multiplicilty of purposes taining structures and the need associated with eg earth and wa.1Le-, ret C trequently exists to ensure that movement between adjoinine Piles is prevenlLed, both in service and, or, ozcasions, du-ing piling. Hitherto, this has frequently been effected by either continuous welding or intermittent welding o- spot welding or c-imping. Such processes however. equire either 'he p-iovsion of pliant. at the steel works o- dedicated on-site equipment and as such are expensive and time-consuming.
It i an object of t 1 &c- 1 I.Ms invention to m-Iticate this problem.
From one asDect the present invention provid= -Ies the 'ieng.hwse -s P-i --ounh and in which the P2 edQes of whiCh are formed to define a t Iles are so disposed thaz. Ithe.1troughs interlock, the inne- faces thereof in adjoining p-,les being clamped tightly together by wedges slitted at -er face of the intervals along the length of 'he piles between the out surface of 1-!joining pile.
trough on one said pl, ie and' the adjacent klhe arl T ly be of t tion, the 1he piles may convenient 1 Lhe commonly known Larssen sect interlock or 'clutch' between therr Lhen lying on 'he centreline of the piling structure.
The wedges may comprise a Plate having a number of' tee-th formed on each side, the PIcte having a tape-ed nose to aid initiai irsertion and the leadinc face of each tooth likek,.,ise being t.2pered towards said nose, at least one tooth having. a restricted length and a stutb-ended trai",-, rg I'ace -he wedae is driven such 4-hat the whole of said one tooth whereby, when 4. s engaged by tthe adjoining piles, withdrawal is inhibited.
8,1 r. n, 5 / R 1 -V/ -.' _ ' ll k\ -h may be provided on Pre.f.'erably a said 'one' tooth of restricted -ieng'l'. each side; indeed more than one such teeth may be provided on each side; r arranged in staggered rows. Additionally othe, Leeth may be provided, of 4- 47 in the grealLer height than said one teeth and disposed rearwardly Lhereo, direction of drive of the wedge.
The 'head' of the wedge may conveniently be enlarged for ease of driving, a shoulder being provided from the inner side of which the said 'othe,t tee"t.h extend.
hat or the The taper on the nose may define a sharper angle than leadinQ faces of the teeth.
T '-ior, may be fully understood one embodimen.' n order that the invent thereof wi 1 1 now be descri bed, by way o, examp- 1 e. wi th ref erence to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a plan view of inte-locked '-a-,sser. p,ie,-; Figure 1. in which the si ing o the igure 2 is a perSpez:tive vie,,.' oll t wedges is more apparent; Ficure 3 is a side el -he wedoe., and levation c7 II Figures 4.5 and 6 are sectlions B-E, IC-'. and 5-D on Figure respe-. 'Livel,x.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, larssen-section steel piles 1 are shown interlocked with diagramatically i-Austrated wedges 2 intervals along - driven-in ai;. Lhe piles' length, from one side ony, in -s are possible such as the tive arrangement the clutched region (alternat wedges being driven in Trom both sides bult only along alternate inteclocks).
The wedges are show.rl in more detail in Figures '13 to 6.
T---'k^,.1810/CDBI R - 9 7 - 1 T In particular, each wedge 2 has a tapered nose 3 and a shouidered head 4. A row of ridged teeth 5 is provided on one side 6 of the wedQe and a matching row of teeth 7 is correspondingly sited on the opposite side 8, ion and having its leading face each tooth being triangular in sect tapered to alion with the end of the tapered nose.
An additional pair of such teeth 9 is likewise sited on the side 8 but set back from the level of the leading faces of the teeth 5,7.
A pair of teeth 10 of greater height and larger cross section than the others mentioned is Sited on the side 6 and these extend rearwardly to - t the shoulder 4 to provide a decree of support therefor against the hammering action.
The wedge may convenien.L.1r be forged from steell.
The design of the wedge thus described makes it evidentlly easy to drive -ion into and between 4, ilal Ehe -rat Ling sur' ces bevond 4 in and. with pene-11. Lhe mat stub or butt end of the teeth 5 and a practical impossibility tor inadvertent detachment.
Although the invention has been described with reference to the t t embodiment illustrated, it is to be understood that Cher forms of interlocking pilinc, eg Frodingham type, may, readily be secured by teeth formations, wedging in the fashion described. Further, different shapes and -Ioe--a.'1..ions than those shown may readily be adopted, on the wedge.

Claims (1)
- we claim: -1. A piling lengthwise trough and structure comprising piles the edges of which are formed to define a in which the piles are so disposed that the troughs interlock, 'the inner faces thereof in adjoining piles being clamped tightly together by wedges sited at intervals along the length of the piles between the outer face of the trough on one said pile and the adjacent surface of the adjoining pile.2.A piling structure according to claim 1, which are of the commonly known Larssen section, the interlock or clutch between then lying on the centreline of the said structure.A piling structure according to clain 1 or clair. 2, in which the wedges comprise a plate having a number of teeth formed on each side, the plate having a tapered nose to aid initial insertion and the leading face of each tooth likewise being tapered towards said nose, at least one tooth having a restricted length and a stub-ended trailing face whereby, when the wedge is driven such that the whole of said one tooth is engaged by the adjoining piles, withdrawal is inhibited.OPR26/348 1 - lk 4. A piling structure according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which a said %onet tooth of restricted length is provided on each side of the wedge.5. A piling structure according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which a plurality of' said %one' teeth of restricted length is provided on each side of the wedge, arranged in staggered rows.6. A piling structure according to any one of claims 3 to 5, in which a shoulder is provided on the head of the wedge remote from the nose to sustain driving forces, the wedge including a number of teeth extending towards the nose from said shoulder of larger width and height than the said one teeth.7. A piling structure according to any one of clairs 3 to 6, in which the taper on the nose defines a sharper angle than the taper on the teeth.8. A piling structure according to any one of clair.s 1 to 7, in which the wedge is made from forged steel.9. A piling structure substantially as herein described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.OPR26/348 2 WC) PL4TP- rrown Maybe obu ftem The fttent OMM
