Abstract

Hand - wheels. - In means for joining by wood-screws tubular or other hollow metallic members to other metal parts, such as arms, there is inserted in the hollow member a plug of a material (other than wood) into which the screw can be driven. This material may be compressed or moulded asbestos or other fibre, which may be vulcanized or waterproofed, compressed millboard, or ebonite of a low vulcanization; or the plug may comprise a body of hard plasterous or metallic substance or ebonite having a hole plugged with fibre or lead to receive the wood-screw. As applied to securing the metal spokes 6 of a motor-vehicle steering- wheel to its tubular metal rim 4, wood-screws 3 passing through the lugs 5 are driven into transverse holes 2 in the fibre &c. plugs 1, which are spaced by a gauge around the rim before its ends are welded.
