Abstract

221,989. Temperli, E. H. Nov. 1, 1923. Tools for setting-out work. -A combination instrument of the kind in which a blade is adjustably mounted on a stock so that it can be set and secured at any desired angle in relation thereto, comprises a rectangular stock 2 in one face 8 of which is formed a depression 9 of V- section, the blade 7 being disposed in a slot 6 which communicates with the depression and is so positioned that the apex 12 of the depression lies in one face 14 of the slot. The blade is formed with a bevelled groove 33 in which is seated a feather 32 carried by a screw 31 so that by tightening the screw the blade can be clamped in any position to which it has been adjusted. The screw 31 passes through a screw 27 and engages an internal thread in a sleeve 26 having also an internally-threaded portion 28 engaged by the screw 27. A pointer 38 mounted on the sleeve 26 indicates on a scale 43 the angle between the blade and the stock. When the blade is turned to abut against the face 17 of the slot the instrument can be used as a square or for marking the centre of a shaft, Fig. 4, or for drawing a line on the surface of a shaft parallel to the axis. For marking a corresponding line on a tapered shaft the blade 7 is turned until it is in contact with the surface of the shaft which rests in the depression 9. A scriber &c. is then inserted through a longitudinal aperture 20, Fig. 14, in the stock and is drawn along the shaft in contact with the edge of the blade. Spirit levels are mounted on the faces 47, 48 of the stock.
