Description

:UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LIPSY, OF BOZEMAN, MONTANA.
SCRIBING-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,688, dated October 30, 1900.
Application filed .I une 28, 1900 l To all whom t nutg/ concern/ Be it known that I, WILLIAM LIPsY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scribing-Tools; and I do declare the following to be aA full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in scribing-tools, and especially to the provision of a device which may be adapted for use in finding the center of a cylinder and marking the inner circumference of the same to determine in what respects the wearing-surface of the cylinder may have become irregular.
More specitically, the present invention consists in the provision of ascribing device having a handle slotted at one end and designed to carry in said slot and at right angles to the shank of the handle a graduated scale, pointed at one end in alinement with the shank portion, while its opposite end is bentat a right angle and also pointed or apertured to receive an adjustable marker, each end being adapted to be used as a scriber.
My invention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure l is aperspective view of a cylinder, showing my scribing device applied thereto for the purpose of centering the cylinder and determining as to the irregular inner circumference thereof. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail View of the tool, showing a slightly-modiiied marker at one end.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a cylinder, in which a block of Wood B is fitted transversely across its diameter. This block is placed a short distance within the cylinder, preferably about an inch or two, and its center indicated on one face at the point of in- Serial No. 21,974. No modell.)
tersecting lines B', drawn diagonally across said face.
The tool comprises the handle G, having an aperture D in the end thereof, and its extreme end is pointed, as seen at d. A graduated scale E is adjustably held in said aperture, and a th umh-screw F, passing through a threaded aperture` in the shank of the handle and through into said. aperture D, is provided for the purpose of holding said scale in a iixed position. The scale E has one end pointed, as seen at E', which point, when the tool has been centered, is utilized to mark the inner circumference of the cylinder. The opposite end of the scale E is provided with a sharpened Vmetallic arm H, extending at right angles to the scale, Fig. l, or instead of the point being integral with the scale the latter may have an aperture in it send to receive a marker H, held by a set-screw in an adjusted position.
In applying the tool when used for centering up a cylinder after the block B has been placed in position within the cylinder the point d is placed against said board at the point of intersection of the lines Band the scale run ont until the end E' strikes the inner circumference of the cylinder and will scribea line on the inner circumference of the cylinder at all locations which are equidistant from the center, thus determining the worn or irregular portions upon the inner circumference. By the use of thej angled point H, with the scale properly adjusted, a circle may be scribed on the end of the cylinder as a guide to bore the interior of the boiler or cylinder toa uniform diameter.
The angled point H or the removable point H', which is used as a marker, is not generally used in connection with the integral point E unless there may happen to be a shoulder on the inner surface of the cylinder, which may be scribed simultaneously with the marking by means of the point E. The points H and H are usual-ly designed .to be utilized for scribing circles for any purpose not in connection with cylinders.
Vhile I have shown my improved tool as applied for use in centering up cylinders, it will be obvious it may be utilized for various purposes for scribing, centering piston-rods, dto. Instead of the integral angled point H if it is desired to utilize a pen or pencil for IOO der, combined with a graduated scale held in mi aperture at right angles to said shank, one end of the scale being provided with e pointed extension in line With the length of the scale, its other end provided With a pointed arm or extension disposed at right angles to the scale, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM LIPSY.
