Application January 4, 1938, Serial No. 183,379
2 Claims. 01. 33-189) The invention relates to a tool and more par- The opening I2 next to a longer edge thereof ticularly a combination center head level and merges into a V formed recess l3 while threaded bevel protractor into the body I through the opposite longer edge The primary object of the invention is the profor projection into the opening l2 diametrically '5 vision of a tool of this character, wherein the opposite the recess I3 is aset screw 14 for engagesame is adaptable for laying out a line for a key ment with a piece of work, such as a shaft, rod

Referring to the drawings in detail, A desig- The turret is also formed with a laterally olfnates generally the tool in. its entirety conset guide 21' for a rule blade 28 having the usual structed in accordance with the invention and inlineal scales 29 and 3e, respectively, thereon, the Volves a plate-like body l0, preferably made from guide being fitted with a. lock 3| for adjustably metal, having the rounded opposite ends II and locking the rule blade 28 in the use thereof. 50 is of elongated formation. The turret is now placed on the work, such as a shaft, rod or the like I5, and revolved about the latter until the bubble in the level 24 is in position whence the set screw l4 clamps the work holding the tool and shaft fixed relative to each other. Now by snapping the punch l8, a dot is placed on the shaft in that the punch will strike and mark said shaft when snapped. This operation is repeated at the opposite end of the shaft, rod or the like and the two markings will align with each other. The tool is susceptible for use in laying out splined shafts and in the laying of ten splines the turret will have been turned thirty-six degrees and thereafter the tool revolved on the shaft until the bubble in the level 24 is in position again. It is possible to have the tool remain secured on the shaft, rod or the like and the shaft revolved in a shaper or milling machine. Now to use the tool as a double edged protractor, the barrel H with the punch l8 therein is detached and also the set screw I4 is removed whereupon the rule blade 28 is placed in the guide 21 on the turret and such tool is now converted for the use thereof as a double edged protractor.
The tool is susceptible for use in setting the timing on engines any number of degrees before or after dead center by clamping it to the crank shaft of the engine.
What is claimed is:
1. A tool of the kind described comprising a body having a work-receiving opening wholly within the same and also a V-shaped notch communicative with the work-receiving opening, a punch guide barrel connected with the body and opening into the notch, a punch slidably fitted within the barrel for projection into the V-shaped notch, spring tensioning means confined within the barrel and active upon the punch for projecting the same into the notch, and a clamping screw fitting the body for axial alignment with and directly opposite the punch to be projected into the opening in said body.
2. A tool of the kind described comprising a body having a work-receiving opening wholly Within the same and also a V-shaped notch communicative with the work-receiving opening, a punch guide barrel connected with the body and opening into the notch, a punch slidably fitted Within the barrel for projection in to the V- shaped notch, spring tensioning means confined within the barrel and active upon the punch for projecting the same into the notch, a clamping screw fitting the body for axial alignment with and directly opposite the punch to be projected into the opening in said body, and means connected with the punch and exposed eXteriorly of the barrel for retracting said punch against the tensioning means.
