Abstract

221,712. Blackburn Aeroplane & Motor Co., Ltd., and Rennie, J. D. Dec. 17,1923. Hydro-aeroplanes. - A hull for flying.boats comprises a cigarshaped upper body structure annular or ovoid in cross section and braced by transverse frames 1 and longitudinals 2, the intervening spaces being filled in with thin sheets of wood &c. In the way of the main fore-and-aft spars 12, the transverse frames 13 are considerably deeper and are supported by an internal sleeve 14 with fore-hand-aft tapering extensions which merge into the interior surfaces of the body structure. The construction results in the distribution of strains over a considerable area of the hull. The lower part of the body structure consisting of outwardly-splayed sides 4 and a dihedral bottom 5 is supported by bowshaped frames 7 and internal rings 8. The spars 12 are attached to the frames 14 by upper struts 16 pivoted to a fitting 18, whilst the outward struts 19 converge on a plate 21 L partly extending through the skin of the body structure and are supported by internal struts 22, 23. A flexible sleeve 26 renders the point of entry of the struts 19 waterproof.
