Abstract

221,692. Strauss, J. B. Nov. 12, 1923. Bridges.-A bascule bridge is formed of pairs of trusses 2 pivoted on trunnions 3 and provided with tails 6, to which are pivoted at 22 reinforced concrete counterweights 16 cut away on the side faces to enter between the uprights 8. The supports 6 for the trunnions at each side consist of members 7 and 8 connected together by horizontal members, and the supports 8 on the two sides. are connected together by horizontal stiffeners. Inner supports 14, 15 are provided on each side, on which the trusses rest when in closed position to take the live load. The counterweight has metal reinforcement consisting of upper and lower cross bars 18, 20, connected by diagonals 19, and is hung from uprights 21 connected to the ends of the lower cross bar. Other horizontal reinforcement 30<a>, 31 is provided with diagonal members 32 to transfer the weight of the concrete to the upper cross bar, meshing being used for the outer surface of the block. Links 24 are pivoted to the ends of the lower cross member of the counterweight and to the fixed members 8 at the other ends, the counterweight pivots, trunnion and link pivots forming the corners of a parallelogram, the side of which connecting the counterweight pivot and trunnion lies wholly within the leaf tail and the side connecting the counterweight pivot with a link pivot lies wholly within the counterweight. Specification 14430/14 is referred to.
