Abstract

402,933. Skips. McGIVERN, E., 142, High Street, Kirkcudbright. Nov. 19, 1932, No. 32758. [Class 78 (iv).] A skip for handling concrete &c. is provided with a bottom-discharge opening 3 closed by an internal plug-valve 9 which is operated by a rod 10 extending to the upper end of the skip and is arranged to support the bucket on failure of the crane-rope supporting the bail 8. The rod 10 may be operated to open the valve by a second crane-rope, and if a single-drum winch is used this second rope may pass through a match-block on the crane-jib and be arranged to raise the valve when the skip is lowered to a desired level. As shown in Fig. 1, the rod 10 passes between the cross-bars 15 which extend across the bail, and the rod is enlarged at 16 to engage beneath the bars. The centre portion of the bars 15 is offset so that the rod 10 clears the bail and does not fall to the side of the bucket when free. The bars 15 may be connected across the top of the skip. As shown in Fig. 3, the rod 10 carries a bearing 23 for the eyes of links 19, 20 pivoted to the sides of the bucket, one or both eyes being elongated to provide sufficient play. One of the links may be omitted and the other pivoted for movement in the vertical plane. The cross-bars, or the links may be transverse to the bail 7 or in other positions, and a link or links such as 19, 20 may be used in conjunction with cross-bars 15. As shown the valve is a hollow ball with detachable hook 12 and seats upon a detachable mouthpiece 3.
