Abstract

A hand propelled lifting mechanism for a beehive comprises a hoist or crane with an adjustable grab, suspended from a tubular framework 2, which is mounted on a wheeled bogie 1. This facilitates the elevation and transportation of the individual or multiple Bee Comb housing sections 3 of a conventional beehive frame. <IMAGE>

Description

BEE HIVE HOIST In bee keeping, during certain seasons it is necessary to dismantle a hive so that the produce may be extracted. This involves lifting each section of the hive so that the combs can be removed.
Another common practice in bee keeping is moving the complete hive onto moorland so that the bees are near the heather and can collect the pollen.
The problem encountered in the first case is the physical lifting of the sections eg, one section can weigh 25 kg, which could be a problem for one person to handle.
In the second case a crane has has to be used to lift the hives on and off a wagon or trailer, this can be a costly operation.
The invention described below sets out to overcome these problems.
The Hoist has dual purpose, firstly for general maintenance of the hives when they have to be dismantled and reassembled or moved over short distances ie from one part of the garden to another, secondly the hoist can be used to load hives onto trailer, then be transported with hives to lift them off at the destination.
The construction of the Hoist is of a tubular framework in the preferred enbodiment, as shown in fig. 1. Mobilty is by means of pneumatic tyred wheel which allows the Hoist to be used on rough terrain.
The weight of the Hoist is kept to a minimum by the framework encompassing the hive and thus keep the centre of gravity within the framework. This means that no counterbalance weights are needed when lifting with the pulley, item 1 fig. 2 When hives are set up, they are usually supported on planks, sleepers or as shown in fig.l a brood box, item 4. To allow access by the Hoist, the chasis has been raised to clear the brood box shown in fig.2.
Lifting is by means of an eight wheeled self-locking pulley as stated. The section of hive to be removed is secured by a lifting frame, shown in fig.4. A nylon chord item 1, or other suitable material is secured to an angle frame item 2, which fits over the top of the hive. Adjustable angle item 3, can be fixed by means of slip rings so as to lift the required sections. To manover the Hoist over brood box, etc, operator using own weigth as counter balance presses down on handles item 2, shown in fig.3 to clear obstruction and then withdraw.

Claims (10)

1. A self contained, hand propelled/operated hoist a transportation vehicle for the removal and or insertion of either complete or segmentation beehive components.
2. A hand operated eight wheeled pulley which is suspended on a frame which facilitates exact and immediate adjustment to the object being lifted.
3. The device described in claim 2 allows the constant 90% vertical relationship to the surface being traversed. As shown in figure 3.
4. Actual construction of afore mentioned frame surrounds and encompasses the article to be raised or lowered thereby ensuring that the centre of gravity in relation to the lifting force being applied is constant and central to the frame.
5. The frame construction allows egress/ingress over and above obstacles of a height which may be predetermined by the front forked section of said frame.
6. Afore mentioned front section of the hoist produces static and a locking mechanism in the form of two downward projections which may act as either a brake or support when the hoist is lifting or in a state of suspension.
7. Frame as described in claim 1 which is supported and propelled by two pnuematic/solid tyres which makes possible travel over rough or smooth terrain with the minimum of vibration.
8. Frame as described in claim 1 which has an adjustable hoist support which is adjustable in height in the vertical plane to facilitate various sizes of hive.
9. Frame as described in claim 1 which two rearwardly extending projections can be removed and are used as the leverage to raise the hive and front stops from the ground and facilitate forward or backward movement.
10. Frame as described in claim 1 which has an integral or removeable braking system which is applied to aforementioned wheels.
