Abstract

997,346. Baling presses. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. April 4, 1962 [Nov. 14, 1961; April 14, 1961], No. 13026/62. Heading B5F. [Also in Division B8] Fibrous materials, e.g. wool, are compressed in a flexible air-tight container or bag 3, fluid is evacuated from the container and the pressure of the atmosphere is thereby allowed to reduce the volume of the container and compress the material. The bag 3 is supported in a metal bin 1 let into a floor 2, a part 5 of the bin being hinged at 6 for removing the filled bag. The upper edge of the bag is held in position by a rubber ring 4. An evacuation pipe having a manually retractable foot, Fig. 3 (not shown), is lowered into the bag before the wool is fed in. The bag mouth is secured round the pipe and air is evacuated from the bag through the pipe. The pipe with the packaged wool attached is raised by means of a block and tackle 16 on a gantry 17, Fig. 2. After removal from the bin, the package is enclosed in a jute sack or in steel bands, the foot 10 is retracted, and the pipe 8 withdrawn before the sack flaps are closed. Air may then be re-admitted to the bag by puncturing the bag wall. The bag may be of polyethylene film, polyvinyl acetate film or regenerated cellulose film. Modification.-As shown in Fig. 4, a jute sack may be placed in a box having an outlet pipe 29 for evacuating ait. An upper box 20 is placed on the lower box after the sack is filled, the upper box having a slidable ram element attached to it by means of a flexible tube 22. The lower box is hinted at one corner and may be opened for removing the completed package. Retaining pins 31 may be used to keep the wool compressed when the sack is refilled.
