Abstract

221,228. Kook, O. Aug. 31, 1923, [Convention date]. Cooling bearings; dust, excluding; oil, catching and removing. - Vane - wheels arranged in air or gas currents, for use as spark extinguishers on locomotives, are supported on ball bearings upon a vertical shaft and tight-fitting heatprotecting covers for the bosses of the vanewheels are provided in combination with a cooling circuit. A hollow axle 1 is supported in a chimney by cross arms 2, 3 and carries blade wheels 4, 5 adapted to be rotated in opposite directions by the gas current. The wheels 4, 5 are secured to flanges on members 6, 7 respectively containing ball bearing rings 8, 9 and having screwed thereon hollow covers 10, 11 and 10, 12 filled with asbestos &c. The bottom cover 12 has a conical closed bottom to receive the oil from the bearings whilst the cover 11 has a projecting edge engaging in an annular groove in a tightening member 13 secured to the axle 1. The covers 10 have their free edges bent downwardly to engage in annular grooves in tightening members 14 protected by rings 15. An oil tube 16 inserted in the axle 1 has branches communicating with annular !grooves 17 in the members 14, which, in turn, communicate by passages with the outer space containing the ball bearings. The upper bearing ring 9 is axially extended into a bearing ring 18 from which the oil is led by passages to the interior of the axle 1 so as to join the oil coming from the member 7 into the cover 12 from which oil suction tube 20, Fig. 2, in the axle 1 is attached to the outlet 18, Fig. 1, and passes through a. nut 21 closing the axle 1 to the oil receiver. The axle 1 can then be further cooled by supplying air or water to it through a tube 22, an outlet casing 23 having an outlet tube 24 being secured to the upper part of the axle 1, in which case, the quantity of oil fed to the bearings can be reduced and the residue of oil can be extracted by removing the cover 12, although a tube 25 extending from the oil receiver through the nut 21 and axle 1 to a sucking device may be employed, if desired. If air is used as the cooling medium, the apparatus may be simplified by dispensing with the tube 20, nut 21, tube 24 and the upper part of the tube 16, the latter being bent to the side of the casing 23 with an open mouth. In this case, the air entering the lower part of the axle 1 is mixed with the oil and the mixture passing upwards is cooled by the air; the oil then falls again through the pipe 16 to the bearings after being separated from the air, which is exhausted through an opening in the top of the casing 23. Additional cooling by water or air can also be obtained in the construction shown in Fig. 1 by inserting a U-shaped or coiled cooling pipe in the axle 1.
