Abstract
221,187. Tyler, J. J. Sept. 1, 1923, [Convention date]. Levels.-An instrument for obtaining a level between two points which may be widely separated comprises a pair of liquid-containing vessels connected by a flexible tube and surmounted by transparent tubes into which the liquid extends; means being provided for marking the liquid levels on surfaces adjacent the two reservoirs. Each of the two parts A, B of the device comprises a reservoir 10 surmounted by a tube 13 with which it communicates by an aperture 14, the tube being secured by rods 19 between a plate 15 and the upper surface of the reservoir. Mounted within a flange 22 on the plate 15 is a cylinder 23 serving as an overflow'vessel for the reservoir and communicating with the tube 13 by an aperture 18 which is normally closed by a light valve 30; a tap 25 enables the cylinder to be opened to the atmosphere. Slidably mounted on one of the rods 19 is an index 31 to be adjusted to the level of the liquid in the tube 13, the index carrier being provided with a lug in which is slidably mounted a marking-rod 35. Each reservoir is adjustably mounted on a carrier 44, or it may be arranged to be suspended from the wall. The reservoirs are connected by a tube 40 coiled on cylinders 61 wtihin a box 60 into which the whole apparatus can be packed. For admitting liquid to the apparatus a vessel 53 is provided which is connected to one of the reservoirs by a pipe 56 and a cock 57. Cocks 38 are provided for removing liquid from the reservoirs.
