Trueing rotating tools; disc, wheel, and roller apparatus.-Mechanism for dressing grinding and abrasive surfaces comprises carborundum or like dressing-tools, which have spherical working surfaces and which are moved about two axes to effect a constant change of position of the curved dressing-surface with reference to the grinder undergoing dressing, whereby the dressing surface maintains the same contour independently of wear. As applied to the dressing of an annular mill type of grinder, three tools are employed, two of which, 44, act respectively upon the faces x<1>, x<2> of the grinder, the third, 25, acting upon the edge of the grinder. The tools 44 are mounted respectively upon slides 5, 6 which are reciprocated within housings 3, through rack and pinion gearing 7 - - 12, Fig. 4, by a shaft 13 which is oscillated about its axis at regular intervals. The tools 44 are each mounted to rotate on bearings 43, Fig. 5, carried by a holder 41, which is rotatably mounted, on an axis perpendicular to that of the tool, in a support 40, carried by the slide, and the holder is oscillated', during reciprocation of the slide, by the engagement of a friction sleeve 45, secured to the holder, with a rod 46, Fig. 2, held against a fixed stop 47 by a spring 48. The tool is rotated by its contact with the grinder, and owing to the oscillation about the axis of the holder, perodicallv reverses its direction of rotation. The tool 25, Fig. 3, is mounted to rotate on bearings 23 in a holder 27, which is oscillated about its axis within a housing 28, through a spring 30 driven by an arbor 15. The arbor is oscillated, through gearing 13, 17, 19, 20 and' a gear sector 22 on a sleeve 21 carrying the gear 20, by the rack 11. The housing 28 is slidable within, and is rotated with the sleeve 21, and is pressed by a spring 31 to press the tool 25 against the grinder.
