Abstract
A quilt has an upper portion (1) and a second portion (2), one of the portions having a TOG value making that portion suitable for use alone as a summer quilt and the other portion having a TOG value making that portion suitable for use alone as an autumn quilt, fasteners being provided to enable the two portions (1) and (2) to be secured together to form a quilt having a TOG value appropriate for winter use. <IMAGE>
Description
BEDDING
This invention relates to bedding and in particular to bedding of the kind referred to as a duvet or continental quilt. These comprise a filling material enclosed by a casing, and are sufficiently warm to be used without another form of top bedding other than an outer cover.
Conventional quilts are provided in a variety of warmth to weight ratios. However a quilt which is suitable for use in winter may be too warm to be comfortable in summer.
The thermal resistance of a quilt is measured in units of TOG.
1 TOG = 0. lm KW The TOG value, or thermal resistance of a quilt is ten times the temperature difference between two faces thereof when the thermal flow rate across a unit area is 1 watt.
A measure of the efficiency of a quilt as a thermal insulator relative to the mass of the quilt is the ratio of
TOG to mass per unit area (gm cm ).
According to the present invention bedding comprises a quilt formed in first and second portions, adapted to be secured together peripherally with the first portion overlying the second, wherein the two portions have substantially different TOG values.
Selection of appropriate TOG values provides a quilt which is comfortable in use during all seasons of the year.
For example the first portion may have a TOG value of 4.5, suitable for summer use; the second portion may have a TOG value of 9 for autumn use; and both portions secured together having a TOG value of 13.5 may be used in winter.
The portions may be secured together by means of sliding clasp fasteners, hook and pile fasteners, press studs or by any other convenient means.
Fasteners are preferably disposed lengthwise along the side edges of the two portions.
The invention is further described by means of example and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:
Figure 1 illustrates a quilt in accordance with the
invention;
Figure 2 illustrates the quilt with the two portions
separated;
Figures 3 to 5 illustrate alternative uses for the
quilt; and
Figure 6 shows the upper quilt portion fitted
with a waterproof groundsheet.
Figures 1 and 2 show a quilt in accordance with this invention comprising a first, upper portion 1 and a second, lower portion 2.
The upper portion is a filled quilt which may be quilted with a suitable pattern. The filling may produce a TOG value of 4.5, making the upper portion suitable for summer use when used'alone. Two sliding clasp fasteners are provided along each longitudinal edge 3,4,5,6. the upper portion may be 15 cm narrower than a standard single bed but is of standard length.
The lower portion 2 is filled to produce a TOG value of 9, making it suitable for spring or autumn use when used alone. Fabric flaps 7,8 extend longitudinally along each edge. The flaps conceal open ended sliding clasp fasteners e.g. 9,10 arranged to engage the fasteners of the upper portion. The lower portion has the dimensions of a standard single bed quilt (B.S.5335/1983).
In Figure 1 the two portions are shown secured together with the fasteners concealed by the flaps 7.8. This results in a warm quilt having a TOG value of 13.5 suitable for winter use.
There are many additional advantages to use of a quilt in accordance with this invention.
The quilt may be used as a double sleeping bag, the users sleeping between the upper and lower portions.
The quilts may be joined together along one edge as shown in Figure 3, affording a single quilt which is large enough to be used on a king sized bed. Such an arrangement is particularly applicable when two partners prefer different amounts of warmth.
Either portion of the quilt can be folded lengthwise and fastened to form a single sleeping bag as shown in Figure 4.
The upper portion 1 may be folded crosswise and fastened as shown in Figure 5 to form a baby's sleeping bag.
Moreover, the quilt portion folded as shown in Figure 5 provides a cot quilt having a TOG value of 9. This TOG value is the usual rating for a cot quilt.
The narrower width and less bulky filling allows use of the upper portion as a mattress protector or thermal underblanket.
Figure 6 shows use of the upper portion 1 with a waterproof or showerproof groundsheet or liner 11. The liner has sliding clasp fastners 12,13,14,15. The liner allows outdoor use as a baby's playmat. The liner 11 may be used alone as a waterproof mattress protector.
Alternative fasteners for the quilt may be employed e.g.
hook and pile fasteners, press studs or hook and eye arrangements.
Claims (11)
1. Bedding comprising a quilt formed in first and second portion, adapted to be secured together peripherally with the first portion overlying the second, wherein the two prts have substantially different TOG values.
2. A quilt as claimed in claim 1 wherein appropriate TOG values have been selected to provide a quilt which can be modified to be comfortable in use during any season of the year.
3. A quilt as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the first portion has a TOG value 4.5 suitable for summer use.
4. A quilt as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein the second portion has a TOG value 9 for autumn use.
5. A quilt as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the total TOG value of the two parts together is suitable for winter use.
6. A quilt as claimed in claim 5 wherein the TOG value of the combined quilt is 13.
7. A quilt as claimed in any preceding claim wherein fastening means is sliding clasp fastener(s), hook and pile fasteners or press studs.
8. A quilt as claimed in claim 7 wherein fasteners are disposed lengthwise along side edges of the two portions.
9. A quilt as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the fasteners are such to enable the quilt or a part thereof to be arranged to form a sleeping bag.
10. A quilt as claimed in any preceding claim and including a waterproof portion.
11. A quilt substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
