Abstract

221,051. Dahlberg, A. O. July 12, 1923. Reservoir pens.-A fountain pen is provided with, a pump disposed within the barrel for self-filling purposes and arranged so that the ink resists further action of the pump when the pen is full. As shown, the self-filling device comprises a piston 7 provided with a rod 8. the lower end of which is formed as a valve 9 adapted to close am opening 12 in a collar 11 fixed in the piston. The rod is slidable through the collar 11 between limits formed by the valve 9 and lugs 15 on the rod. The rod passes out through the rear end of the .barrel and is acted on by a spring 13 normally holding the valve 9 closed and the piston retracted. The forward end of the piston is recessed to contain a float 16 held in place by a wire 19, and formed with a passage 21 and a projection for closing an opening 18 in the piston. For filling, the rod 8 is pushed in to open the valve and move the piston forward by means of the lugs 15, the air in the barrel escaping through the passages 21, 18, 12. On releasing the rod, the spring 13 acts to close the valve and retract the piston to draw in ink. When the. barrel is full, the float 16 is lifted to close the opening 18 to prevent the escape of ink through the piston should pumping be continued too long. In a modification, the rod is fixed to the piston, and openings, which converge into the opening 18, are adapted to be opened or closed by a disc slidable on the rod.
