Abstract

205,421. Mitchell, O. Feb. 13, 1923. Reservoir pens. - The barrel 1, Fig. 1, of a, reservoir pen is closed at its rear end by a. gland 4 through which passes a rod 8 into the open end of a cylinder 6 carrying a frictionally-mounted piston 7 arranged so that an airpassage through the piston is opened and closed for filling purposes on reciprocation of the rod, a pipe 5 being provided to establish communication between the interior of the cylinder 6 and the outside air. The piston 7 is mounted' between stops 83, 84 on the rod, 8 which is hollowed out at its lower end and provided with a side aperture 81. The rod 8, when first reciprocated from the position shown, slides through the piston 7 to close the aperture 81, the piston being then moved by the stop 83 and the air compressed in the cylinder 6 escaping through the pipe 5. The air in the barrel is thus rarefied and ink is drawn in through the feed-bar. In reversal of the movement, the rod slides through the piston to uncover the aperture 81 and establish communication between the parts of the cylinder 6 above and below the piston 7, which is then moved by the stop 84. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the lower end' of the rod 8 is reduced in diameter to leave a passage 71 through the piston, and is provided with a spider to engage the bottom of the piston to permit the passage of air, and with a conical valve 86 to open and close the passage 71.
