Facilitating writing.-A writing board A for use by the blind or in the dark is provided at each side with a plate B having spaced notches co-operating with similarly spaced bars C<2>, C<3> or other parts of a cross-guide C, which serves as a line-spacer and is moved into position for a fresh line by turning it over about the lower bar C<2> or lower parts so as to bring the upper bar C<3> or upper parts out of engagement with the notches and into the notches next below the lower bar or parts. The guide C may guide the pencil during writing, in which case it is provided with resilient members C<1>, Figs. 5 and 6, between upper and lower bars C<2>, C<3> or at the sides of a central bar C<4> looped at the ends to engage the plates B; or the guide C may guide a finger of the writer, a gauging slide E being then arranged at the left-hand side of the board A to indicate the position of the pencil &c. at the beginning of a fresh line. The slide E comprises a thin metal plate provided with flanges e', e<2> engaging the inner and outer sides of the left-hand plate B and cut away to receive the guide C and allow it to engage the notches, with a projection E<x> of wood &c. to position the pencil, and with a striking plate e<x> operated to move the slide E into position for a fresh line by the bar C<3> of the slide C when the latter is turned over. The top of the board is provided with a pivoted arm D serving to hold the guide C in position when it is out of use at the top of the board, with a spring paper-clip A<1> and flanged paper-stops a<1>, and with a spring-controlled punch A<2> used to form an indentation on the paper indicating the side written upon. The starting position for a fresh sheet is determined by stops b adjustably mounted on the plates B, the slide E being moved upwards for a fresh page after the guide C has been moved against the stops b and slipping into place beneath the guide C and in engagement with a stop A<x> by means of an inclined surface on the projection Ex.
