Blind persons, teaching &c.-An appliance for use by blird persons in writing and drawing comprises a framed slate formed of two plates a, b through which pass a large number of pegs or pins e adapted to be depressed flush with either face of the slate by means of a stylus m<1> on a thimble m, Fig. 4, worn by the operator, or by the rounded end of a pencil or of one arm of a pair of compasses, the pins being frictionally mounted, as for example by passing through an intermediate layer b of leather, canvas, woven wire &c., or by forming spring tongues around the apertures in the surfaces of the slate. Or an apertured plate i, Fig. 9, may be movably mounted between the two outer plates, and be pulled out of register by a spring l adjustable by a nut k. In another form such an intermediate plate may be moved into and out of register by means of a cam to lock or release the pins. A straight edge n, Fig. 10, having apertures may be slidably mounted on the frame, and may be fitted with a pivoted guide arm r. In a modification, a sliding straight edge p, Figs. 11 and 12, having a turned-over edge p<2> to engage and depress the pins, is pivotally mounted at p' so that its leading edge may be raised or depressed out of the path of the pins. The device may have hinged covers adapted to be retained closed by spring catches. For writing purposes a guide plate may be used having serrated rectangular openings of a size to cover a group of six pegs. Impressions of the characters formed by the pegs may be made on a sheet of paper pressed over the plate by a roller to receive indentations.
