[Class 11] In an appliance for teaching drawing, means by which a copy or model is rendered visible through a translucent drawing-surface is connected with the pencil or other drawing - instrument, so that the pencil is held out of operative position as long as the copy is visible. The pupil is thereby obliged to visualize the object whilst it is being drawn. In one form, drawing-material 2, Fig. 1, extending between rolls 3, passes over an aperture in a table 6, which may be covered by a glass plate, and the drawing-copy 4 is carried by a pivoted arm 5, which is connected by a string 10 to a pencil 7. The pencil is thus held away from the drawing-surface as long as the copy is in view, and is lowered when the copy is removed. In a modification, the copy is carried by a slide 25, Fig. 3, and is interrupted by parallel white strips. Above the slide is a celluloid plate 19 having alternate clear and white strips, on which the drawing is made. A pencil or fountain pen 11 slidable in a tube 12 is connected to the slide 25 by a wire 15 passing through a tube 16. As long as the picture strips or the copy are visible through the clear spaces of the plate 19, the pencil is retained within the tube 12 and cannot be used. When the pencil is projected by means of a stud 13, the slide 25 is moved so that the copy is hidden by the white strips of the plate 19. The copy may be projected on to the drawing-surface by an optical projection device controlled by the movement of the pencil.
