Abstract

A heated table mat (10) has a base (12) which is covered with felt (13). A heating element (18) is located below a top (20) but above the base (12). A heat resistant surround (24) is formed around the mat (10). In use the mat (10) is placed on a table top or incorporated in the table top during manufacture for the purpose of heating food and the like. <IMAGE>

Description

TABLE PLACE MATS FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to table place mats.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION It is always a problem to maintain the temperature of food especially where a multi-course meal is being served. The soup course is often served before the guests sit at the table with the result that it becomes cold.
Dinner table chatter often results in the slow consumption of a particular dish which, as a result, becomes cold sometimes with inedible results.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to overcome these problems.
The conventional hot tray is the only device known to the Applicant which is available to maintain the temperature of food but this is only designed to keep the bulk food hot.
THE INVENTION According to the invention a place mat or set of place mats is provided, each of which includes heating means.
In one form of the invention each place mat includes a metallic surface and electrical resistance heating means therebelow, the underside of the mats having an insulating layer.
In a preferred form of the invention insulating material incorporating air pockets is provided below the heating element.
The mats are self regulating so far as temperature is concerned. The mats may be incorporated in a table top or the like.
EMBODIMENT Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.
A sectional side view (Figure 1) is shown of a heated table mat 10 comprising a base 12 which is covered with felt 13 or the like insulating material. Air slots (not seen in the drawings) may also be provided. An on/off switch 14 is located at one end of the base 12, which includes further insulation 16 to prevent heat from the heating element 18 reaching the base 12. The top of the mat 20 is of anodised aluminium or like material and an intermediate insulated sheet 22 may be inserted between the heating element and the top 20 of the mat.
A heat resistant surround 24 completes the mat construction and a cable 26 runs through the surround 24 to the switch 14 and element 18.
In one form of the invention a control panel (not seen in the drawings) may be provided containing multiple illuminated switches so that they may be controlled fro the head of the table by the host/hostess.
A central distributor 28 is shown in Figure 2 which includes outlets 30 for multiple mats and has a mains lead 32 and a fuse 34.
In another form connection points can be fitted to the outside edge/stretcher rail of any dining table of any shape.
In Figure 3 a typical arrangement of mats 10 is shown on a table top 36 and also includes central mats 38 for maintaining the heat of vegetable dishes, gravy or the like.
In another form of the invention the heated mats may be recessed into the top of the tables and is ideal for restaurants and other places. Dining tables can also be produced with mats inserted into certain positions. In a further form a table mat the size of any given table can be made with or without inserted mats.
Figure 4 shows yet another embodiment of the invention.
An induction heating coil 40 is located in a recess on the underside of a table 42. The second part of the heat induction system comprises a table mat 44 with coils 46 set in an insulated base 48.
