Abstract

A heated table mat comprising a battery (2) driven heating element (4), manual switch (5) and indicator light (6). <IMAGE>

Description

HEATED TABLE MAT This invention relates to a heated table mat.
During formal meals, a diner's hot food often goes cold before being eaten due to conversation taking priority over eating. By giving the diners individual heated table mats it is possible to keep their food hot and more palatable for an extended period.
According to the present invention there is provided a heated table mat, comprising a battery, heating element and manual switch plus indicator light all within the body of the table mat. By this means a plate of hot food placed on top of the heated table mat may be kept warm at will by a diner. The heating element may be simple resistors and the indicator light may be manifested as several coloured light emitting diodes for decorative purposes besides indication. Rechargeable batteries are preferrable to nonrechargeable batteries for economy in regular use.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a general view of the heated table mat to illustrate its shape and external features.
Figure 2 shows the internal layout of components.
Figure 3 shows a typical cross-sectional view of the heated table mat.
Figure 4 shows the electronic circuit diagram of the heated table mat plus battery charger.
Referring to Figures 1-4, the heated table mat comprises an arrangement in which a heating element (3) consisting of four resistors (4), heats up when a slide switch (5) in thrown manually. At the same time a light emitting diode (6) illuminates to inform the operator. Heat from the heating element then passes through the table mat top surface (1) to the plate of food above. It has been found that more heating of the plate occurs when the resistors are clamped to aluminuim inserts (9) set in a thin steel top surface rather than just being suspended below the top surface (1).
Six nickel-cadmium rechargable batteries (2) of 1.2 volts each connected in series are contained within the housing (1). A thermal insulator such as green baize (7) is glued to the underside of the housing to minimise the heat conduction downwards towards the table.
The charger (8) is necessary to recharge the batteries after use at a constant current of SO mA.

Claims (7)

1. A heated table mat comprising a battery, heating element, manual switch and indicator light.
2. A heated table mat as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the heating element may be made up of resistors or other resistance material.
3. A heated table mat as claimed in Claims 1 or 2 wherein one or more indicator lights illuminate to show when the heating element is on or off.
4. A heated table mat as claimed in any previous claim wherein the batteries may be rechargable.
5. A heated table mat as claimed in any previous claim wherein the mat may be used for heating other than food on a table.
6. A heated table mat as claimed in any previous claim wherein the housing body may be styled or decorated at will.
7. A heated table mat substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawing.
