Abstract

220,063. Cox, F. J. May 8, 1923. Radiants for gas fires.-In a diaphragm of refractory material for surface combustion apparatus, as described in Specification 25808/09, the granules at the combustion surface are smaller than those at the inlet side. The granules may be of gradually increasing size from one side of the diaphragm to the other. The diaphragm may be constructed of two or more layers, each composed of granules of a size different from those of the other layer or layers, the layer or layers of coarser granules being preferably thicker than that or those of finer granules, or it may - consist of two or more thin layers of small granules and a thicker layer of larger granules. The combustion surface may be undulating or corrugated. The diaphragm may be curved or cylindrical. When the outer surface of the cylinder is the combustion surface, gaseous mixture is supplied to one end of the cylinder, the other end being closed by material, similar to that of the cylinder and preferably integral therewith or otherwise. When combustion takes place on the inner surface gaseous mixture is supplied to a casing surrounding the outer surface of the cylinder, which may be open-ended.
