Description

Feb. 26, 1924. 1,485,129
H. E. SMITH BURNER FOR PETROL GASES AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. 25, 1923 INVENTOR.
Patented Feb. 26, 1924.
HUBERT ELWELL SMITH, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
BURNER FOR PETROL GASES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed August 25, 1923. Serial No. 659,383.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT ELWELL SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Brit ain and Ireland, residing at 6 London Street, London, W. 2, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Burners for Petrol Gases and the like (for which I have filed application in England on the 30th May, 1922, patent application No. 15,186 of 1922, No. 200,986), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burners more especially intended for the consumption of mixtures of gasoline or other hydrocarbon with air such as are now commonly employed for lighting and heating in villages and large establishments. It is concerned with burners wherein combustion takes place within the burner upon a surface at some distance from the actual mouth of the burner, i. e. from the opening through which the products of combustion reach the atmoshere. p One object of the invention is a burner of elongated form having means for egress of the products of combustion distributed along its length, and having a combustion surface within the burner casing permeable to the gas mixture and dividing it longitudinally.
More specifically the invention is a tubular burner having perforations at intervals along its length, and having a partition of wire gauze or perforated metal dividing it longitudinally so as to shut off a part of the tube from the openings to form an enclosed combustion chamber.
Other features of the invention will appear from the following detailed description of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section and Figure 2 a transverse section of a long tubular burner consisting of a mixture chamber in the form of a tube 22 having a number of openings 23 through which the flame and products of combustion issue. The tube screws into the enlarged end of a supply pipe 24 and is closed at its other end by a screw cap 25. A combustion chamber is formed within the tube by a longitudinally extending combustion surface which is a partition of metal gauze or perforated metal 26 on the surface of which adjacent to the openings 23 the gas burns. A number of sheets of wire gauze 27 may also be secured transversely in the tube 22 by the aid of spring rings 28 to serve as a means for preventing back-fire into the supply tube.
I claim- 1. A burner for gasolene and air mixtures, comprising a tube having perforations large enough to provide for the passage of the flames and products of combustion distributed along its length, the tube being closed at one end, transverse diaphragms of gauze at the other end to prevent backfire, and a perforated partition extending longitudinally of said tube to form a combustion chamber therewithin, the outer surface of said partition constituting a combustion surface.
2. A burner for gasolene and air mixtures, comprising an elongated chamber having means for egress large enough to provide for the passage of the flames and combustion products extending over the greater part of its length, and a combustion surface permeable to the gas mixture extending lengthwise of said chamber and dividing off a part of the chamber from said means for egress to form an enclosed space within which the combustion takes place.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HUBERT ELWELL SMITH.
