Abstract

Optical apparatus.-In apparatus for recording sound photographically, a low-pressure discharge lamp is employed, comprising a bulb containing two electrodes, one or both of which include a photo-active material, the lamp being used in association with a source of light to which the photo-active material is exposed. This arrangement enables a comparatively low voltage to be used for supplying the lamp. The electrodes are preferably closely associated, and the photo-active material used may be an alkaline earth oxide or oxides, or an alloy of sodium and potassium. The lamp may contain gas such as helium. The Figure shows diagrammatically an arrangement of the lamp 16 in sound-recording apparatus comprising a microphone 1 and a thermionic valve 8, The lamp circuit, which includes a battery 17 connected to the electrodes 14, 15, is coupled to the plate circuit of the valve bv a transformer 12. Light from the lamp is focused as usual upon a moving film 18.. A source of light 25, behind which may be placed a reflector 26, is so arranged adjacent to the lamp 16, that the electrodes are exposed to rays from the source 25 and thereby rendered more active. Modified forms and arrangements of the lamp electrodes and methods of depositing a photo-active coating upon the cathode, are described.
