Abstract

198,799. Clifford of Chudleigh, (W. H. Clifford), Baron. March 13, 1922. Multiple-diaphragm sound-boxes.- In apparatus in which the vibrations of the usual diaphragm 2 of a gramophone &c. are amplified by means of extra diaphragms 5, 7, which, with the diaphragm 2 form an air chamber 6 and a second chamber 8 containing non-inflammable gas preferably at less than atmospheric pressure, an electric current is passed through the gas chamber. When used for reproducing sound, this current preferably varies in correspondence with the sound waves. Fig. 2 shows the application to the reproduction of sound from a photographic record formed on a kinema film, by means of a selenium cell 13. Current variations corresponding to the sound record are passed through an electromagnet 15 the armature of which is fixed to the rear diaphragm 16, and are also applied to the gas chamber 17 to amplify the vibrations of the diaphragm 16. In order to transmit sound to a distance the back of the diaphragm 7 may be silvered to reflect a beam of light on to a selenium cell, so producing current variations corresponding to the sound waves.
