170,560. Graaff, W., and Dresla, P. Oct. 16, 1920, [Convention date]. Thermionic amplifiers.-Relates to methods of recording and reproducing sounds by photographic means. In recording, the sounds received by a microphone a, Fig. 1, act across a transformer b to produce electric fluctuations in the grid circuit G of a thermionic tube amplifier, or several of these arranged in parallel, whereby amplified fluctuations are produced in the current in the plate circuit A, K of the amplifier, which circuit supplies the filament of a lamp d comprising an envelope filled with a rare gas. The light from a lamp d, Fig. 2, acts through a cylindrical lens e and slotted plate f on a continuously-moving sensitive film g. In reproducing, the developed film g, Fig. 3, is moved across a slit n on which a constant light k directed through a condenser l is focused by a cylindrical lens m, the light that passes through the film acting on a selenium cell i corresponding to the shape of the slit n. The cell i is in a circuit acting across a transformer o on the grid circuit of a preliminary amplifier comprising several thermionic tube amplifiers arranged in parallel, and the plate circuits of this act across a transformer on the grid circuits of a similar amplifier the plate circuits of which include a telephone receiver or the like.
