Abstract

A fence post (2) consists of at least two post parts (4) which are spaced apart with a space (10) left therebetween in which longitudinal fence elements are in use received. <IMAGE>

Description

FENCE POST The invention relates to a fence post.
So far, fence posts are of solid design, and the longitudinal fence elements between the posts are secured to the fence posts on the front side or rear side thereof. For providing sufficient stability and strength with respect to fence loads, the fence posts must have a certain minimum cross-sectional area. As a consequence thereof, conventional fence posts are quite voluminous in cross-section and heavy.
It is an object of the invention to provide a fence post having an improved ratio of volume and weight to stability and load bearing capacity, respectively.
According to the invention, there is provided a fence post, comprising at least two post parts secured together in such a manner that there is a space left free therebetween. The fence post according to the invention is therefore characterised in that it consists of at least two post parts put together in sandwichlike manner with a space left free therebetween.
The fence post of the invention has almost the same stability and load bearing capacity as a solid fence post with the same outside dimensions; however, it is considerably lighter and necessitates a considerably lower material expenditure.
Besides, it has a more pleasing appearance.
The post parts are preferably identical with each other.
Preferably, the post parts are of rectangular cross-section, with circular-segment-shaped or semicircular cross-sections, trapezoidal cross-sections or the like being conceivable as well.
Preferably, the post parts are put together by means of screws or rivets. It is especially convenient to thread together pairs consisting of a screw and an internally threaded sleeve each, so as to put the post parts together.
The screw and the sleeve may each have a head of substantially spherical segment shape, which adds to the good appearance and reduces the danger of injuries.
The post parts preferably consist of steel or wood. However, other materials, especially metals such as e.g. aluminium, or concrete are possible as well.
Preferably, the longitudinal fence elements are received in said space, in particular in such a manner that the mounting screws for putting together the post parts are at the same time threaded throughsaid longitudinal fence elements. This measure additionally enhances the good appearance. Moreover the longitduinal fence elements can serve at the same time for determining the width of the space between the post parts.
The invention and further developments thereof. will now be elucidated in more detail on the basis of embodiments shown in the drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a fence post as seen in the longitudinal direction of the fence to be erected; Fig. 2 shows a number of fence posts with longitudinal fence elements mounted therebetween, as seen in the direction of the arrow II in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 shows a number of fence posts as seen in the direction of Fig. 2, however with different longitudinal fence elements.
The fence post 2 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 consists of two identical post parts 4 of steel. The post parts 4 each are of rectangular cross-section. The post parts 4 are arranged parallel to each other and put together by an upper screw 6 and a lower screw 6 to form the post 2. More strictly speaking, the screws 6 each consist of an externally threaded screw proper and of an internally threaded sleeve which is in threaded engagement with said screw. Both the screw proper and the sleeve have a head of spherical segment configuration.
It can be seen especially in Fig.. 1 that longitudinal fence elements 8 extending from fence post 2 to fence post 2 are received in the space 10 between the two post parts 4 and are threaded secured to the post parts 4 by means of the afore-mentioned screws 6. From each threading location a longitudinal fence element extends forwardly from the drawing plane of Fig. 1 and a further longitudinal fence element extends rearwardly from the drawing plane of Fig. 1.
In Fig. 2, it can be seen that the longitudinal fence elements 8 are disposed in crossed, obliquely extending manner, with an element extending from the lower threading location of a post 2 obliquely upwardly to the upper threading location of the next following post 2, and vice versa.
The embodiment according to Fig. 3 differs from the embodiment described hereinbefore in that each fence post 2 has three threading locations disposed above each other and in that between each pair of two fence posts 2 extending down to the ground there is provided an intermediate post 2' extending only from the uppermost longitudinal fence element 8 to the lowermost longitudinal fence element, but extending not down to the ground. Between the posts 2, there are provided three longitudinal fence elements 8 each, which are arranged above and parallel to each other. As for the rest, this embodiment is designed in identical manner as the embodiment described hereinbefore.
