Abstract

Fastenings for sliding windows; latches, sliding; striking-plates. - A sash fastener, adapted to serve as means for raising or lowering the upper sash by movement of the lower sash, comprises a spring-pressed bolt a in a casing e on the lower sash b capable of being fixed in an intermediate position and a socket c near the top of the upper sash having an inclined track and leading to its lower edge, which is of less depth than its upper edge t. The socket c may be attached to the centre bar of the window and, if the sash is provided with a horizontal cross-bar, a bridge-piece having a double inclined flanged track is mounted thereon to guide the end of the bolt a over the bar. Projections g, h on the bolt a, which normally slide in a slot k in the plug j, can, on rotation of the bolt, be caused to bear against the face of the plug j to secure the bolt in the full retracted or intermediate positions respectively. On raising the lower sash with the bolt a in its intermediate position, the bolt clears the lower edge of the socket c and engages the upper edge t to raise the upper sash, if open. If the lower sash is raised with the bolt a fully shot, the bolt runs up the incline r and shoots into the socket, c, when, on lowering the lower sash, the bolt a engages the lower edge of the socket and lowers the upper sash. A lateral finger-piece u may be provided on the socket c so that the upper sash can be raised or lowered independently of the lower sash and the socket c may be formed as a double socket, with inclines r at top and bottom each leading to a separate socket, so that the socket can be applied to either the right or left hand side bar d of the upper sash. A socket w may be provided on the upper sash for securing the sashes in the closed position, and this socket is preferably provided with an inclined track x leading to a socket y which allows the sashes to be secured in a partially open position.
