Abstract

Vices.-In vices of the kind in which both jaws are adapted to be rotated about their common longitudinal axis, the fixed base 1 of the vice is formed as a bearing 2 for the stationary jaw 6 and has conical surfaces 3, 3<1> at its ends with which engage a conical-faced washer 4 and a conical face 7a on the jaw 6, these being secured by a nut 15 screwed on to a spindle 11 non- rotatably held in the stationary jaw. A key 20 on the jaw 6 engages a groove 19 in the sliding jaw 18 to prevent relative rotation of the jaws, the key preferably being formed integrally with a pin 21 forced into a suitable hole in the jaw 6. An internally-screwed operating shaft 17 extends through the jaw 18 and is attached thereto, so as to permit of relative rotation, by a half-washer 25 secured to the jaw by a screw 27 and engaging a groove 24 in the shaft. The shaft engages the screwed spindle 11 which is prevented from rotation in the jaw 6 by a key 10, formed thereon, fitting into a recess 9 in the jaw. On slackening the nut 15, the jaws 6, 18 may be simultaneously rotated about their common longitudinal axis in the bearing 2.
