Abstract

Vices.-In vices of the kind in which the movable jaw is screw-operated and is guided so as to have a parallel movement by pins fixed to the movable jaw and slidable within the vice body, the movable jaw is pressed back by coiled springs applied to the guiding-pins, and a contact-piece is placed between the movable jaw and the adjusting-screw, which are connected by an axial pin. A metal block c, Fig. 1, of which the part a, leather faced at a<2>, a<3> forms the fixed jaw of the vice, is provided with a truly machined groove j<2>. An adjusting-screw d, engaging a threaded hole c<4> in the part c<5> of the block c, is fitted with an axial pin g screwing into the movable jaw e, which is leather faced at e<4>, and in which are screwed two pins h, Fig. 2, having heads h<4> guided in holes in the part c<5>, coiled springs i bearing against the heads h<4> and pressing the movable jaw e outwards. A contacting piece f is placed between the movable jaw e and the end of the screw d and slides freely in the threaded hole c'. The movable jaw e has a top plate e<5> and side plates e<6>, e<7>, fitting over the part c<5> and enclosing the working parts. Two or more of such vices may be applied to a rod, passing through the holes j<2>, to co-operate in holding a piece of work.
