Abstract
191,960. Herbert, Sir A., and Lloyd, A. H. Jan. 17, 1922. Attachment for inserting bolts and screws; studding chucks.-In chucks for holaing screwed work and adapted particularly for screwing studs and the like into place, the engaging threads on the work and the chuck are locked by a transverse wedge operated by a cam or the like on a rotary portion of the chuck. The apparatus may be operated by machine or by hand. The bcdy A, Fig. 1, is yieldingly driven through friction washers G and a shank F, and is bored to receive a member A<2> which is permitted a limited angular movement against the resistance of a spring A<11>, Fig. 3. A transverse wedge C, Fig. 1, sliding in the member A<2> is of such a length as substantially to occupy the full diameter of an eccentric portion C<5> of the bore in the body, and is adapted to operate an axial thrust-pin D in a detachable threaded work-bush B which is secured in the part A<2> by a cotter B<3>. The bushes B are interchangeable. The arrangement is such that in. the normal driving position the pegs A<9>, A<12> are in contact and the thrust-pin is fully depressed, but on reversal of the chuck after the stud has been inserted, the member A rotates independently of the part A<2>, and slides the wedge transversely, thereby releasing the locking pressureon the stud.
