Hand gear.-The valves of a steam engine are worked by a lay shaft which is made in two parts A, B arranged so that they can be connected directly for forward running by a clutch F or indirectly for reverse running through bevel gearing C, D, E. The wheel C is keyed to the shaft A, and wheels D, E are loose on their shafts. The wheels C, D each have a recess to receive a driving-tooth on the clutch F which slides on the shaft B and is operated by a hand-controlled collar G through springs K.
