Abstract

Wire ropes; strands of special section with; machines for making.-The core of a strand for a rope composed of six triple-edged strands is made of triangular section with a creeping apex, so that it is not necessary to twist the core after formation by means of pressure rollers. The core is formed of three sets a. b, c of two wires each which are shown separated in Fig. 1 for the sake of clearness. The three sets of wires are drawn from flyers which are caused to rotate backwards relatively to the cage of the machine used for making the core, and each flyer comprises two spools, delivering the individual wires, and constrained so that their axes are maintained horizontal. The machine is geared so that while the cage rotates through 360‹ the flyers rotate through 90‹ and this causes a core to be formed, the edge of which has correspondingly crept through 60‹. The figures t show sections of the core at various points along its length. In place of using double wires, double strand may be used. The strands are formed by laying round wires over the cores and are combined to form a completed rope as shown in Fig. 3.
