Abstract

495,255. Making wire ropes; drawing; rolling. CALLENDER'S CABLE & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd., and HARRIS, G. M. April 9, 1937, Nos. 10141/37 and 4967/38. Addition to 476,863. [Class 109] [Also in Group XXII] The invention described in the parent Specification for making compacted wire strands is applied to the manufacture of such strands consisting of a single layer of wires preferably four. The interior of the compacted strand, when hollow, may be filled with a rubber or bituminous compound or with like mouldable material. Wires 7 are delivered from bobbins 6 carried on a carriage 4 which is keyed to a rotating shaft 1 and supported by rollers 5. Each bobbin 6 is rotatably supported in a frame 9 and has a crank lever 10 connected at its lower end to a weighted ring 11 so that each lever is maintained vertical. The wires are deformed by rolls 31, Fig. 5, one of which may be grooved, or by a die 14 and a spring-pressed mandrel 18 slidable in an adjustable holder 19, or, as shown, by a combination of these devices. The wires are stranded in the throat of the die 14, and the strand is further compressed in a die 21, which may comprise a die 23 and rolls 24 and is rotated by a chain 27 when a prespiralled strand of non-circular cross-section is required. A capstan 22 draws the strand and wires through the machine. Other combinations of dies and rolls, which may be driven, may replace those shown. Wires 7A, Fig. 6, initially of circular section are separately deformed to the section 7B, and are further circumferentially compressed to the section 7C during stranding. Further compression of the strand in the die 21 deforms the wires to the section 7D. Similar stages are shown in the production of strands of non-circular section and for strands of hollow or closed final form. A filling 30, Fig. 11, of unvulcanized or partly vulcanized rubber or other material is delivered to the interior of the strand from a reel 29 through a bore 38 in the mandrel 18 and is compressed therein in the successive stages. One or more wires 35 may be embedded in the rubber. An outer layer of rubber may be applied, and the core and covering vulcanized in one operation.
