Heat and temperature coefficients, apparatus for determining.- A device for measuring the flow of heat through a surface such as a wall &c. consists of a plate, the heat-insulation effect of which is so small that it does not appreciably affect the heat current, the plate being placed in contact with the said surface and being provided with means for measuring the difference of temperature between its opposite faces. In the form shown the plate a is provided with a number of thermo-couples wound around it in such a way that all the hot junctions b are on one face and all the cold junctions b' on the other, the end couples being connected to a galvanometer &c. f. The wires may be protected by an insulating material or they may be embedded in the plate itself. The plate may be made of a flexible material such as rubber, leather, &c. In the case of a cylindrical surface such as a steampipe, the plate is in the form of a flexible strip wrapped round the pipe. The thermo-couples may be replaced by electric resistance elements. The measuring-instrument may be graduated to give a direct reading of the heat current.
