410,572. Measuring flow of heat. CHANCE BROS. & CO., Ltd., Glass Works, Smethwick, Birmingham, and FORSTER, A. L., Glasgow Glass Works, Firhill, Glasgow. Feb. 8, 1933, No. 3817. [Class 97 (iii).] For measuring heat transmission, e.g. through the thermal insulating covering of steam pipes, boilers, furnaces &c., a resistance thermometer or thermo-couple is contained in an envelope formed from a pair of thin flexible strips or sheets or a folded sheet of material having a definite coefficient of emissivity and negligible resistance to the passage of heat. Fig. 1 shows a resistance thermometer enclosed between a pair of strips or a folded strip of thin varnished silk in the form of a bandage bound in position round a steam pipe b by cords f. Alternatively the envelope may be in the form of a patch adapted to adhere to the surface to be tested by a thin layer of adhesive.
