Actuating-mechanism. - A valve lever 19 is maintained in contact with the valve stem 16 and tappet rod 18 by means of toggle links 20, 21 acted on by a spring 24 tending to break the toggle. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the toggle is arranged between the lever and a fixed pin 22 so as to form a fulcrum, but in another form, Fig. 4, is constituted by the tappet rod 18 and a link 25. Convex bearing-surfaces are provided between the lever and the link 20, tappet rod 18, and valve stem, and also between the two links of the toggle. In a modification, the leaf spring 24 is replaced by a coiled spring.
