Abstract

217,516. Braren, L. K. Jan. 5, 1923. Turning; feed motions, tool.-A cam mechanism for automatic lathes, particularly automatic screw machines, comprises an auxiliary camshaft geared for part of each revolution to a main camshaft running at constant slow speed, and for the remainder of the revolution to a shaft running at a constant high speed, the separate drives being of such duration that the main and auxiliary camshafts complete each revolution in the same time. The cam-actuated slides may further be provided with angularly adjustable guides for varying the speed of a given member at different pa.rts of a work-cycle. The auxiliary camshaft 3 carries loosely-mounted gears 9, 10 which mesh with gears 11, 12 on the main camshaft 1 and on the shaft 2 respectively. The gears 9, 10 are provided with clutch faces which may be engaged by the correspondingly formed ends of a clutch 13 feathered on the auxiliary camshaft. The clutch is normally held in gear with the wheel 9 by a comparatively weak spring disposed axially within the hub of the gear 10, but is moved to the right to engage the gear 10 when a circular cam 19 secured to the auxiliary camshaft allows the forked lever 21 to turn under the influence of a strong spring 22. The auxiliary camshaft positively reciprocates a slide 29 by means of cams 26, 26<a>. The slide moves on ball-bearings carried in V-shaped runways and reciprocates a feed slide (not shown) by means of guide channels 38, 39, the latter of which is transversely and angularly adjustable on the slide by screws 44, 47; the former being locked after angular adjustment about a pivot 41 on the guide 39. Gauging-devices. - The adjusting screws are provided with micrometer graduations to indicate the setting.
