Abstract
534,209. Fuze-setting machines. JOSEPH, F. A. June 27, 1939, No. 18692. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to fuze-setting machines having coaxial setting members and a traveller in quickthreaded engagement with one of the setting members for effecting relative angular displacement between the members, the traveller further having a primary adjustment for data and a secondary two-revolution searching adjustment. According to the invention, the fuze-setting operation is effected whilst the shell is stationary in the machine. In the form shown, the fuzesetting pawls 28, 29 are carried respectively by a quick-pitch screw 23 and by a concentric sleeve 25, and a traveller 45 moving in slots 27 in the sleeve engages as a nut with the screw. For graduated adjustment of the relative rotation of the pawls, a sleeve 3 is rotated by bevel gear 6 from a handle 4 in accordance with data from the control station. Inside the sleeve 3 is feathered a sleeve 10 carrying the traveller 45 and having a screw, thread engaging a member 11. After this preliminary setting, which may be made before the projectile is inserted in the machine, rack gearing 18, 14 is rotated to translate the members 11, 10 and move the pawlcarrying members through two revolutions to search for the notches and to engage the pawls therewith, the final relative adjustment of the pawls being in accordance with the preliminary graduated setting. The traveller is formed in two parts 37, 38 relatively adjustable by screws 39 to take up backlash.
