Abstract
712,244. Turret-lathes. ARON, E., and PULMAN, W. E. R. May 2, 1952 [May 2, 1951], No. 10335/51. Class 83 (3) Actuating mechanism for the turrets of automatic lathes includes means for rendering the turret indexing mechanism inoperative during certain periods of the lathe cycle while permitting successive traverses of the turret slide, the mechanism being of the kind wherein a first cam traverses the turret slide and a second cam initiates or interrupts the indexing transmission. The first cam 5, Fig. 1, on a transverse shaft 10 is continuously rotated through bevel gearing 48, from a main cam shaft 47. The cam 5 has inflexions which, through a double-armed lever 6 and rack and pinion gear 8, 9 traverses the turret slide 39. A second cam, Fig. 5 (not shown), carried by the shaft 47, operates in known manner a one-revolution clutch 32, 38, Fig. 2, and has a number of projections equivalent to the number of inflexions on the cam 5. On engagement of the clutch a disc 24 carrying a roller 25 rotates through one revolution and engages a Geneva wheel 26 connected to the turret indexing transmission and the turret is rotated one division. The disc 24 is, however, carried on an axially movable sleeve 29 which may be moved to the right to prevent roller 25 engaging the Geneva wheel by the operation of a third cam 15 on the transverse shaft 10. A forked lever 18 pivoted at 17 carries a roller 19 held against the periphery of cam 15 by a spring 27 and rod 20. The upper end of this rod carries a roller which, when in its uppermost position, engages a cam groove 23 on the periphery of the sleeve 29 and thus moves the sleeve to the right. Depressions 28 in the periphery of cam disc 15 permit this upward movement of the rod and thus interrupt the indexing of the turret allowing the turret slide to make a second or further traverse with the same tool. Other parts of the mechanism function in the manner described in Specifications 712,242, 712,243, [Group XXIV], and 712,245, which are referred to.
